The fourth annual WaterCAN Testing Week marked another milestone in South Africa’s growing citizen science movement - a week where learners, volunteers, and communities united to test, learn, and act for clean water.
Hosted at the Johannesburg Zoo, this year’s event was driven by WaterCAN in partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, who provided the venue and vital logistical support.
More than 60 learners from Diepsloot Secondary School 3 participated in a full-day programme where they learned how to test water quality, explored real-world environmental challenges through a quiz held across the Zoo grounds, and interacted with experts from municipal departments and government agencies about careers in environmental science, sustainability, and public service.
This Testing Week formed part of WaterCAN’s broader Schools Water Testing Campaign, which empowers learners and communities nationwide to collect water quality data, understand environmental risks, and use that evidence to drive accountability. While results are still being processed, close to 1 000 citizen-science water tests have already been conducted across South Africa in 2025 — data that is helping to reveal the true state of our rivers, dams, and municipal systems.
Dr Ferrial Adam, Executive Manager of WaterCAN, said:
“The success of this year’s Testing Week shows the power of citizen science to inspire, educate, and hold government accountable. Each young person who tested water today joined an expanding army of water activists — people who understand that data is power, and that by working together, we can demand clean, safe water for everyone.”
WaterCAN’s vision is of a South Africa where the constitutional right to sufficient, safe water is realised — upheld by accountable governance and active citizen involvement. Its mission is to empower individuals and communities through citizen science, advocacy, and collaboration to secure sustainable and equitable water services for all.
As the organisation looks ahead, WaterCAN is expanding its national campaign into 2026, strengthening its partnerships with schools, communities, and municipalities to build South Africa’s largest network of citizen scientists.
