We extend our deepest condolences to the family and community of the person who was tragically killed while seeking access to water — a basic human right.
SAPS has opened a case and the municipality has initiated an internal process. These investigations must establish exactly what happened and ensure accountability.
This tragedy must not be exploited for political games. People’s lives are on the line.
The incident highlights the consequences of prolonged failures in water service delivery. Had the city ensured reliable access through functioning infrastructure, proper maintenance and necessary upgrades, communities would not have been forced to depend on water tankers for an essential service.
Emergency tanker deliveries should never become the norm.
